Administration officials disclosed the start of federal worker layoffs on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

Although Vought did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been issued within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by the public and pledged to contest the actions in court.

This is shameful that the government has used the funding lapse as an pretext to illegally fire thousands of workers who provide critical services to communities across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO responded to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have refused to support a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved soon.

During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP bill, which passed in the House on a largely partisan basis.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations took place on the same day that government employees got only a partial paycheck covering the final days of September but excluding the beginning of the current month, since appropriations expired at the beginning of the period.

A public service advocate, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make government staff suffer because our elected officials in Congress and the administration have failed to keep our government running,” the advocate said. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
