Micky van de Ven scored twice as Spurs extended their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and delivered Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves the manager's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in role at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two established strikers - had scored just one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and opportunity to readjust for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered threatening balls into the Tottenham box.

Everton: Moyes' men head to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: The London club travel to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round Carabao Cup match against Newcastle.
